Simulator Tool & Training

Simulation
While system operators may spend their entire careers without ever seeing a voltage collapse or a blackout, recognizing and acting on a looming emergency or recovering quickly from a failure is at the core of system reliability. Simulation training prepares you to recognize patterns and clues that signal danger. By incorporating generic and actual historic emergency situations the simulation sensitizes you to potential emergencies. When the system collapses you can replay the events and learn to avoid it in the future.

PowerSimulator, the same EPRI OTS power system model used in the world’s most sophisticated control centers is at the core of SOS Intl simulation training and lets you participate in this training on desktop PCs, laptops and over the internet.

Training on the PowerSimulator is remarkably realistic. Most users report heightened awareness and satisfaction when they successfully handle an emergency or restore the system using the simulator. We hope you never see a total system shutdown and black start, but if one’s coming your way you need to know what it looks like and EOPS will get you prepared.

The potential of the PowerSimulator technology also goes well beyond training. Utilizing the power of portable technology, utilities and regions across the country are using The BRICK (Bulk Reliability in a Compact Kit) in their blackstart drills, using either generic or customized models.

 Generic Simulation Training
Generic PowerSimulator with EOPs Training
Built around the power and light utility of the fictional PALCO System, this system has 29 stations and simulates the functions and variables of most any system in operation today. Additionally, the simulator incorporates many actual historical events so operators can learn from breakdowns that have occurred around the country. Students quickly learn to treat the simulator with the respect of a real power system with a full set of controls including the Daily Dispatch Program.

 Custom Simulation Training
Custom PowerSimulator
Should you choose it, the Custom PowerSimulator replicates your exact power system with substation breakers, switch and bus configurations, transmission lines, transformers and relays, generators and loads all modeled to match your system. Your operators will be looking at the same  symbols, conventions and layout as the real displays and they will experience the same SCADA, AGC and alarming functions as if they were in a live situation.

Your Power System model can be developed and tested using the PowerSimulator WEB service. The PowerSimulator engineers will work with your engineers so that the model is built correctly and cycles reliably. Engineers with authorized security certificates can view and work with the same real-time simulator model over the web to quickly analyze and correct problems. Whereas it can take years to get other EMS simulators cycling reliably, with PowerSimulator WEB it happens in a few months.

Once the model upgrades are tested they can be transferred from the Web Server to our unique PowerSimulator BRICK, which can then be used for training, real-time Contingency Analysis studies and System Operating Limit evaluation. Updated models can be uploaded via an Internet connection or mailed on a CD.

When operators train on your actual system they are much better prepared because they see how their own power system will respond under a wide range of normal, emergency and restoration conditions.
