Simulator Tool & Training : Emergency Operations with PowerSimulator : PowerSimulator & Communication Protocols

 PowerSimulator & Communication Protocols

PowerSimulator & Communication Protocols is an eight-hour, online course designed to familiarize the student with the operating characteristics of the simulated 29-station power system that serves as the model on which further training takes place. The generic, yet sophisticated model includes type, size and location of generating units, size and location of loads, length and voltage of overhead lines and cables, nature of critical loads, location of control areas and tie-lines and the configuration of substations.

Fundamental understanding of and familiarity with the model will be achieved as students:

  • Monitor and switch a simulated AC transmission system
  • Navigate the system one-line displays
  • Monitor the system conditions
  • Perform control actions of transmission operators, balancing operators, station operators, and generation operators
  • Are guided through a series of simulated operating exercises with a basic level of difficulty
  • Observe and record the system conditions and implement specific operating orders
  • Record measurements from the real-time simulator displays
  • Receive feedback to verify if the student has correctly implemented the operating orders

This program is divided into four, two-hour modules:

  • SCP-201
    • Getting started and communicating for results, introduction to the operating characteristics of the simulated 29-station PALCO power system
  • SCP-202
    • System monitoring and visualization, using the system map to visualize the current state of the system and identify SOL violations, guided partial restoration of the PALCO system
  • SCP-203
    • Introduction to the components that make up the PALCO system including physical description, main operating features, its symbol on the Station One-Line displays, measurements and how components are named in operating orders, practice using the components, becoming acquainted with operating orders in the simulated environment
  • SCP-204
    • Transmission switching protocols, simulated switching operations using system station one-line diagrams, performing switching in different scenarios, different breaker configurations used throughout the training in the PALCO system
