NERC Certification is required or recommended for many system operators, and obtaining certification can be a challenge for any individual. The NERC System Operator Certification Program awards certification credentials to applicants who demonstrate knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards and basic principles of bulk power system operation by passing one of four exams:

The exams are partially based on NERC Standards effective Jan 1, 2007. The content of these exams is more centered on application and analysis than previous exams, which instead focused more on recall-based questions.
